Background and objective: Health literacy is one of the social components of health, which plays a vital role in health education and health promotion. The lack of awareness of women and the low level of literacy and its complications reduce the quality of life in postmenopausal women. The key to solving this problem is only to educate women with the right methods of learning. Considering its importance, this study was conducted to determine the health literacy among postmenopausal women in Mashhad.
Materials and Methods: This research is a descriptive-analytic study. The statistical population consisted of 425menopausal women aged between 45and65 years old. The cluster sampling method was performed. The tools used for demographic and adult literacy questionnaires were short forms. The results were analyzed using Kolmogorov-Smirnov test and correlation and chi-square tests in SPSS_24 software.
Results: The average literacy rate between the target groups was 54.06±20.69 out of100, which is equivalent to the borderline level. In this study, 47.8%of the subjects were inadequate, 17.2% borderline and 35.1% adequate level of health literacy.
Conclusion: The overall health literacy score in the sample population indicates that a high percentage of women do not have good health literacy. It should be noted that women need to have enough information to judge whether their symptoms need to be treated and how to monitor medical care in order to empower the group for menopause and its complications. In this regard, awareness of this group about menopause and its complications requires essential interventions.
Research background: Health literacy is an essential element of a woman’s ability to understand, process, and act on health-related information and spans health promotion and disease prevention activities. The aim of this study was to determine the status of health literacy, general health and the relationship between them in women referring to health centers.

Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed on 100 women aged 18-65 years old referred to health centers. Samples were selected randomly from among those who had the criteria for entering the study. In this study, questionnaires of Health Literacy for Iranian Adults (HELIA) and general health (GHQ-28) were used.

Results: In this study, the mean (standard deviation) of the health literacy and public health scores were 68.42 (17.29) and 27.16 (11.74) respectively. Only 21.3% of people had adequate levels of health literacy. Also, based on the results, only 41.5% of the participants were healthy in terms of general health variables. According to Pearson correlation results, health literacy was significantly correlated with the social function disorder variable and did not show a significant correlation with other general health constructs.

Conclusion: Based on the results obtained in this study, most people in this study have an inappropriate health literacy level and, on the other hand, the general health status of most of them is undesirable. According to the important role that women have in family and community, it is necessary to pay more attention to the health status of this group in the community and to design and implement appropriate training programs to increase their level of health literacy.

Background and objective: Various definitions of health literacy have developed gradually. This concept refers to individuals’ capacity to acquire, process and perceive information and basic healthcare services. The above items are required to make decisions on healthcare. In fact, improving both the individuals' access to health information and their capacity to use such information effectively are considered as efficient tools for community empowerment. In the domain of healthcare promotion, health literacy goes beyond the ability to read medical orders and use healthcare services. In the healthcare promotion approach, the emphasis is not put on disease experience or the appropriate use of medical services. Besides, the emphasis is put on the improvement of individuals' life conditions, and providing and promoting required resources for a better life. From the viewpoint of healthcare promotion, healthcare literacy is relegated to the individuals’ ability to make better decisions in the realm of health care. Health literacy approach must try to promote individuals' required knowledge and skills in the domain of healthcare determiners and the way to maintain and modify them. Looking at health education from an applied viewpoint, the final result of health education and communication is to increase the level of healthcare literacy. Reviewing various approaches, levels and types of healthcare literacy will pave the way to conduct researches in this domain.
